Spring 2013 Final Photography Project

Weird Nature
"Weird Nature" is about turning typical spring foliage into works of art. This series of photographs focuses on the close up perspective, and the details that it brings out. I want the viewer's mind to take a step back and see something that they might have never paid attention to before.

Weekly Writeup: Canteen Magazine’s Naked Judging

9. Mary Ellen Bartley

I choose this series of photographs because I felt like they were a very beautiful collection together. Each photograph is simplistic but still holds a lot of meaning. The format of each photo was interesting and flowed nicely with the water. The photograph that I think does not really belong with the series is photo number six. The picture does not have the same dreamy flow that the others have. My favorite picture in the series is number seven. I love how the rip in the paper is somewhat subtle but still eye-catching, it is almost as if the rip is part of the small wave current. What also caught my eye was the very light incorporation of color within some of the photographs. She used a nice tone of grayish blue that fit well with the white background.

Sixth Assignment: Portrait

(Original)

(Edit)

For this first portrait photograph I brought it into Lightroom and mainly used the Adjustment Brush. At first I smoothed out the face, and then brightened up the whites of the eyes, anything to make the picture subtly "glow", making the lighting work with the photograph. Then I increased the sharpness of the photograph ever so slightly, giving more definition to her hair along with the rest of her face.

(Edit)

For this second portrait photograph I used the same technique as I used in editing the first photograph above. Although, this time I used a bit more saturation.

Weekly Writeup: Lenscratch 2013 Portrait Exhibition

JJ PainterNot My Kids, Cincinnati, OH

Out of all the pictures that were on the website this photograph stuck out the most for me. The emotions on both their faces are priceless, you can obviously tell that the smaller child does not like to be in the large puffy snowsuit. The lighting seems natural in this photograph and is also very nice and vibrant, bringing out both their faces along with their bold red snowsuits. The pose of each child is very natural and perfect for their age. The smaller child's pose is adorable, putting more meaning on the fact that she is unhappy about being in the snowsuit. The child in the back looks more curious but also a little unhappy, although, not as much as his younger sibling.

Fifth Assignment: Gritty/Glitzy/Gloomy/Ghostly

 (Original)

 (Edit)

Gritty

Putting the picture through Photoshop, I first used a photo filter adjustment layer, mainly a warming filter. Next, I used a brightness/contrast layer to brighten up the base the dragon rested upon. The last touch up I did in Photoshop was the use of a curves layer which mostly I used on the dragon. Finally I sent it to Lightroom, where I used a filter called 'Old Polar', before correcting the highlights with the adjustment brush.

 Ghostly

With this picture I used Photoshop for the editing process. First, I used a black and white adjustment layer, which gave me more freedom when it came to what color should be the most darkest or lightest in the photograph. After playing around with the adjustments of that layer I came across one that gave it the most haunting feel. Secondly, I thought that the eagle should stand out so by using a masking layer I made it the only part of the photograph that had color. Lastly, I put a gray vignette around the picture and added a eerie mist below the statue of the eagle.

Fourth Assignment: Documentary

Original

Edit

Edit 2

This picture was taken during Genericon at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this past weekend. What is happening in this photograph is a panel called Cosplay Dating Game. When editing this picture I first converted it to black and white in Lightroom. From there I began to crop it, subtracting anything that I thought was distracting or unnecessary. Using the brush tool in Lightroom I darkened the highlights on the clothing and skin of the second and third women, along with the highlight on the man's arm who is by the bright curtain. I then played around with the split-toning option in Lightroom, choosing a calm grayish-blue, as shown in Edit 2. I then brought the photograph into Photoshop and by using the clone stamping tool I subtracted the person from the upper right hand part of the photo.
